The Orange County chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is pleased to announce that the inaugural OC Wine Opener event is to be held at 4pm on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Orange County Wine & Food Center in Costa Mesa. Sponsored by the OC Restaurant Association and OC Life Magazine and A-Med Health Care, the event will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s research and care programs.

The evening will feature a special celebrity chef guest appearance and cooking demonstration with award-winning executive chef, Bravo Top Chef finalist, and host of a television cooking segment, Brian Malarkey. Brian recently won San Diego Magazine’s “Chef of the Year”, and will be appearing in Bravo’s new show, Top Chef Masters. Participating Orange County restaurants include Antonello’s, Chaparosa Grill, Citrus City Grille, Brasserie Pascal, El Callejon, Geisha House, Lucca Café, Pacific Whey, 118 Degrees, The OC Wine & Food Center and more.

The OC Wine Opener will also feature local Orange County winery, Jumping Vines, as well as Temecula’s award winning Briar Rose Winery, and others including, Constellation Wines, J. Lohr Vineyards, Oreana Winery, Semler & Saddlerock Wines, PRP International, with St. James Spirits, Karma Tequila and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery. A special limited edition OC Wine Opener t-shirt will be designed by the trendsetting Orange County-based Hozell clothing, whose shirts can be found at Fred Segal and worn by several cast members of HBO’s Entourage.

Westwood College Dedicates a Memorial to our Publisher...

The recently completed commons area at Westwood College - South Bay Campus has been dedicated to the memory of former CAD/ID Lead Instructor and Westwood's 2007 National Instructor of the Year, Saeed Danosian, who passed away in December of 2008. Students using the facilities are now welcomed by a portrait of Saeed, drawn by Interior Design student Ace Cesar Mendez. A tribute to Saeed’s passion for teaching was written by faculty and hand painted by Game Art student Isabel Zapata.

You are truly missed.

The February cover was an amazing experience... we witnessed the beautiful art of mendhi being intricately drawn on the hands of our model, former Miss India USA Ayushka Singh, and we also had the pleasure of working with Frontier Heritage Boutique and Raj Jewels who provided over $50,000 worth of clothing and jewels for the shoot.

Special thanks to Ziba Beauty - particularly artistic director Oscar Naranjo who did the hair and makeup - and Patty, the amazing mendhi artist.

In Loving Memory of Saeed Danosian

Dear Friends and Supporters of OC LIFE,

Due to the sudden and unexpected passing of OC LIFE's publisher/founder (and my father), Saeed Danosian, the January issue of OC LIFE will be delayed until mid January. This magazine was my father's vision and he was my backbone and strength ever since day one. It is with his energetic and positive spirit that OC LIFE will continue... in loving memory of Saeed Danosian.

My father was an artist, well-known leader in the Persian community and an active philanthropist: www.DanosianArt.com

For those of you who knew him, this was an absolute shock as he was only 54 years old.

His burial ceremony - which had an overwhelming number of family, friends and colleagues in attendance - was held on Wednesday, December 24th at Pacific View Cemetery in Corona Del Mar.

There will also be an extended memorial event after the new year, TBA.

Thank you all for your love and support during these extremely difficult times. Words cannot express how much we will miss our kindhearted and loving angel.

A Cultural Change in America... and OC!

President-elect Barack Obama's historic win last night has begun a cultural change in America... Blacks, whites, Asians, Middle Easterners and many others gathered together all over the country to embrace the vision of CHANGE within our country's government.

And even locally we are starting to see the multicultural community coming out and making their voices heard in a major way in local government.

In Irvine, former Mayor Pro Tem Sukhee Kang has officially won the race to becoming the first Korean-American mayor of a major U.S. city. Former Mayor Beth Krom has always supported a diverse and integrated community and government, and has been fully in support of Kang throughout this year's controversial campaign. In an interview with OC LIFE in September 2008, Kang said, "Before the 2004 election, we didn't have much representation from immigrant comunities. Now look at all the commissions - we have Persian-Americans, Chinese-Americans - different communities coming together and working together. So I think that's a very positive change made in just the past 4 years."

Kang has strong ties to the community (he is known for knocking on doors in Irvine and personally meeting citizens) and a tight cultural connection to his Korean roots. A few weeks ago, the Korean Cultural Center of Orange County awarded him the prestigious Dosan Ahn Changho award for his leadership within the community.

Another Korean-American who has been re-elected to Irvine's City Council is Dr. Steven Choi. Choi was first elected to City Council in 2004. Choi says he values Irvine's cultural and ethnic diversity and harmony and in an interview with OC LIFE he said, "Irvine is truly blessed with ethnic and cultural diversity among our residents... we know how to live in harmony and respect each other."

Indeed, Irvine's ethnic population has grown immensely in the past 37 years - from 18% to 49%. And these growing numbers are apparent in Orange County and the entire country for that matter.

In the end, we're all American and we're all proud to be a part of a country that is moving towards CHANGE.
